Viscous clutches

The viscous fan clutch is a coupling device located between the water pump shaft and the radiator. Its task is to improve the efficiency of the vehicle cooling system while reducing the engine load and energy losses caused by the fan itself.
The visco clutch also allows the fan to run at lower speeds and effectively disengage at higher speeds. By means of a bimetallic element (plate or spring) placed on the clutch, the temperature in the engine compartment is controlled and the visco clutch, and thus the radiator fan, is engaged or disengaged. The undoubted advantage of this solution is the lack of additional loads on the electrical components of the engine (alternator). However, it should be remembered that in the event of a failure, do not delay its replacement, as this may lead to overheating of the engine (when the visco clutch does not engage the fan) or damage to the water pump, pulley or belt (when the fan turns on permanently).

Therefore, if you notice that the engine becomes excessively hot or its temperature does not reach optimal values, it may be necessary to replace the viscous coupling.

The bimetallic plates used are selected with great precision, which ensures that the fan is switched on in the appropriate temperature range and disconnected when its operation is not necessary. This allows the engine to operate in optimal conditions without causing excessive loads on the drive unit as well as the engine accessories (longer life of the water pump and belt). The lower loads are the benefits of lower fuel consumption and optimal use of the available engine power. The high-quality ball bearings used for production ensure quiet and long-lasting operation.

In the case of viscous couplings, the method of their storage and storage is also important due to the silicone oil they contain. Visco SRLine couplings are kept in the natural position for the operation of such a clutch (vertical) without any loss of the properties of the fluid they contain.
